A Life-Sized Hulkbuster Cosplay Stole the Spotlight at NY Comic-Con

Ever since Marvel hinted that there would be a fight between Iron Man and Hulk in the second Avengers movie, Comic book Fans was full of joy and anticipation. Especillay after the release of the first few images of the battle. Iron Man with his Hulkbuster in brutal fight against the raging Hulk. I don't know when it exactly started but it seems that many fans out there have been trying to build the Hukbuster suit themselves. Most of them built a Life-sized statue of the suit. But rarely succeeded in building an operable Hulkbuster suit like Thomas DePetrillo did. Meet Thomas DePetrillo – the New York Comic-Con attendee who took cosplay to a whole new level by building the sensational Hulkbuster suit as seen on Avengers 2: Age Of Ultron.

It took Thomas DePetrillo around 1,600 hours over two years  to build the suit, and it  is the most domineering suit he's ever built in his 19 years career. His dedication in building the suit  certainly amazed many attendees at the Comic-Con. Thomas DePetrillo is not new in Costume making, in fact he actually owns a costuming company called Extreme Costumes which already won several top prizes at other Comic-Cons around the country. Well, that explains it, but still we're astonished by dedication  some fans put into cosplay.

Building the Hulkbuster suit is a huge project even for an experienced guy like DePetrillo. The amount of effort he and his team put into the suit is fascinating. “It’s an accurate reproduction of the ‘Iron Man’ suit of armor,” DePetrillo said. The Suit standing at 9.5 feet and weight around 95lb. Its thickness is 44 inches and has a width of 6 feet 6 inches. Due to its complex design and size, Thomas Depetrillo needed at least 20 minutes to put on the suit and that with the help of 2 or 3 people, and despite its size and weight, he was able to move around while in it. DePetrillo moves the arms and legs in the suit using a complex system that allows for life-like motions.  He used aluminium as the suit skeleton, cover the top half with polycarbonate and EVA foam for the bottom half. The suit is almost indestructible and possibly bulletproof, it's really strong yet lightweight. The suit was equipped with speaker and microphone, allowing the user to project his voice over the noise of a large crowd, When the suit moved, it made a crashing sound  to simulate that the Hulkbuster is supposed to weigh two tons.

Eventually Extreme Costumes took home a $US1,500 prize during the NYCC Eastern Championships cosplay competition for its Hulkbuster costume, and the decision is never really a surprise considering how the suit stole the spotlight with its appearance. Although the response for the suit was very good, DePetrillo said he sill had some tweaks that he would like to make. With Comic-Con already behind him, DePetrillo planned to participate in other cosplay competitions, competing with world’s top costume-builders in the country.
